Savski Venac may be the first borough in Belgrade and Serbia to get an ecological neighborhood. This idea about ecological housing that came from the European Union is going to be implemented in Italy, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary in addition to Serbia.

We will find out in February 2014 how this neighborhood will look like as then we will know the winners of the Eco Green Village Architectural Design Competition. This neighborhood will be made up of MILD Home facilities (MILD is short for My Modular, Intelligent, Low cost, Do it yourself, nearly zero energy House for our Eco Green Village). It is a project that is being implemented as part of the EU SEE transnational cooperation program for research and development.

Nina Mitranic, the project leader, explains to eKapija that the Savski Venac borough has already proposed a location, but he also adds that such a neighborhood can be built anywhere in Serbia.

- We would like to hear what architects have to say about the design of this neighborhood and materials to be used in its construction as well as their new ideas, so we could make modular, intelligent, low-cost, do-it-yourself houses. These houses are energy-efficient and cheaper than regular ones - Mitranic explains.

According to our interlocutor, aforementioned competition will be followed by the preparation of a feasibility study.

She also says she hopes that green villages will be built all around Serbia.

Eco neighborhood in Savski Venac

According to current data, the future green neighborhood may be situated in Borska Street, in the most southern part of the Savski Venac borough, at the very border with the Vozdovac borough. The designated site covering about 3 hectares is located near the corner of Borska Street and Crnotravska Street.

- This location now belongs to the Army of Serbia, and it is marked for conversion to residential area in the Master Plan.

Home for young people

The primary target market for MILD homes are young couples and families. The idea is to build housing units ranging in size from 40 to 90 square meters, and each of them should have access to an open-air space - balcony or garden.

These MILD homes should not all look the same. It should be possible to adapt them to fit the tenant's taste and lifestyle. The plan is to build between 100 and 200 housing units within that neighborhood.

Apart from eco homes, the neighborhood will also comprise a kindergarten, daycare center for children, multifunctional facilities, space for recreation, etc.
