New main routes in Belgrade - from Jurija Gagarina Street and Vojvođanska Street to Obrenovac and Airport

Judging by recently adopted changes and supplements to the General Land-utilization Plan (GUP) prior to 2021, Belgrade should get another top-quality traffic link with future Belgrade-South Adriatic highway, while the most significant innovation in the network of new city main roads is Surčinska main route, which will stretch from New Belgrade's blocks to the bridge to Obrenovac and further to Ibarska main route. The greatest importance of this main route lies in the relief of traffic congestion on the right bank of the Sava river and easier connection between the capital city and western and southern parts of our country. According to the changes in GUP, total length of new roads will be about 10 kilometers.

According to the adopted Spatial plan for Belgrade-South Adriatic infrastructure corridor, the new road will go from Ostružnica cloverleaf interchange, on the right bank of the Sava, and then through Radnička Street – Vojvode Mišića Boulevard – Kneza Miloša Street.

As Miodrag Ferenček explained for eKapija, the beginning of that route will be in blocks 45 and 64, that is, housing complex Dr Ivana Ribara, wherefrom two new main routes will diverge - one as the extension of Vojvođanska Street and the other as the extension of Jurija Gagarina Boulevard.

- According to the innovations in GUP, these two streets will be connected to the new crossroads in the vicinity of Galovica canal, wherefrom one branch will lead to Airport Nikola Tesla, while the other will go towards the bypass, that is, Obrenovac. Surčinska main route will not have either entry or exit to already built route of the bypass around Belgrade. Instead, construction of delevelled passage under or above the alternate highway is already in the pipeline - Ferenček explained.

This new network of main routes will become even more significant in case of realization of the light metro project because the route of this high-speed city transport would run parallel to the new main route and lead to the Airport.

- If the light metro replaces the existing tram railway route in Jurija Gagarina Boulevard, it will open the possibility of extension of the route to the Airport, which is not part of the General Plan yet. The response should be given by the advisory commission formed by the Mayor. If they make the decision that the metro project from 1981 is valid, we will use that project, but if they decide for light railway system, then we will have to work on the details that have already been agreed by Serbian-Spanish expert team.

“And somewhere in the distance, the connection between Chinese bridge and new bridge near TENT Nikola Tesla can be seen”

Ferenček points out that there is no use in discussing the new main routes if the complete network of roads to Obrenovac and so-called Srem's transverse is not built. That is, actually, the route that will lead the traffic, in the end, to the future, now already famous "Chinese bridge", which will connect Zemun and Borča on the Danube. That is where many more traffic problems wait for us to resolve them, especially in the section from the Danube, that is, Dušanova Street in Zemun, to the highway because it is a part of T6 road, which is already now used to the maximum and has no room for new traffic. According to the new concept, the traffic from the future bridge, that is, highway E75, will be connected to that road. Dušanova Street will have big "obligations" and two solutions are offered. The first is construction of additional lanes on each side of the street and establishment of the regime of crossroads. The other option is leveling of the cloverleaf interchange in Dušanova Street in Zemun, near "Chinese bridge" - Miodrag Ferenček explained numerous city planning dilemmas.

Having in mind already built space, as well as created conditions in the corridor of the suggested main route, it is necessary to provide the possibility of alternate traffic link with the new Novosadski road through Prvomajska Street in order for the most acceptable traffic and spatial solution to be found. Prvomajska Street will be broadened and completed as an important street with the aim of connecting Novosadski road and Zemun's center through Jakuba Kuburovića Street, the tunnel link between Mihaila Pupina Boulevard and Prvomajska Street, while those anticipated by earlier plans will be excluded.
