Four more stars for “queen of spas” - Merkur to invest EUR 4 million in luxurious Splendor complex

The Special Hospital Merkur celebrated its seven decades of successful activities, during which it had made Vrnjacka Banja famous and become a synonym for a successful health-tourism complex, by making new investments.

This is the biggest investment of Merkur in the past ten years, the one which will continue the successful activities of the “queen of spas” - the exclusive medical center Splendor, in whose four stars as much as EUR 4 million is to be invested.

The first part of the Splendor complex will be a reconstructed old mansion, only 200 meters away from Merkur, right above the Fontana hotel. In close proximity to it, the new facility, with wellness and spa features and outdoor and indoor pools, will be built. As the Special Hospital Merkur says for eKapija, the first works on the new facility should start by the end of the current year, whereas the complex is planned to be completed by the end of 2018.

The old mansion, which is now ruined, was raised in 1928, by local engineer Vasa Popovic. The reconstruction is meant to bring its old look back. The new facility will have two underground levels and four floors (sub-basement, basement, ground floor, two floors and a loft). The total accommodation capacity of Splendor, including both the old part and the new part, will amount to 58 luxurious rooms and apartments.

– Splendor will be a combination of the new and the traditional – Merkur says for eKapija.

The complex will feature a wellness, spa and fitness center, a medical unit with full diagnostics, an aesthetic medicine part, a multifunction hall... The guest will have both an indoor pool and an outdoor pool at their disposal.

The conceptual design of the new Splendor hotel was made by architect Mirko Pavlovic.

– The beginning of the first phase, that is, rough construction works, is expected by the end of the year. Other works and equipping are planned for 2018, and the completion of Splendor is expected by the end of next year – Merkur says and adds that the project should be realized in 12 months from the beginning at the most.

The investment is worth around EUR 4 million, and Merkur will partially finance it from its own funds and partially from a loan.

– Splendor will be a combination of medical, sports and congress tourism. The idea is for guests to be provided with a full medical and spa service in one place, to unify therapies, diagnostics and treatments, that is, everything Merkur is already offering, except brought to an even higher level. The new center will be adjusted to guests looking for comfort and luxury – our interviewees say.

The Special Hospital Merkur has invested a lot in the past decade in modernizing the equipment, reconstructing the old facilities and building new ones. The vision of the further development of the institution is based on its leading position, not just in the country, but in the region as well. In order for this to be realized, Merkur says, the construction of a top quality health tourism service facility needs to take place, meeting the high demands of both local and foreign guests with considerable purchasing power.

70 years of success

From July 10 through 14, Merkur organized the Anniversary Week, during which numerous events were held, the final of which was the presentation of Splendor.

Dr Sci Med. Dejan Stanojevic, director of SH Merkur, as well as architect Mirko Pavlovic, talked at the presentation of the future facility, as did Dr Danijela Karamarkovic, who discussed the medical aspect and the spa center. Jasmina Miletic, head of the technical department, talked about the accommodation and catering at SH Merkur, and Midorag Miljkovic, head of the marketing and IT sector, discussed online sales and marketing. Andrijana Dragic, the future manager of Splendor, organized and hosted the event.

– Our intention is to create a facility which will suit even the most demanding guests, who are looking for a better accommodation and even more quality features than we have here right now – Stanojevic said.

The story of Merkur as a spa center begins in 1947. Vrnjacka Banja is known as the queen of spa tourism and the place the Serbian aristocracy used to rest in, having realized the advantages of stays in a spa and the benefits of its waters.

Today, Merkur is a modern resort located in the very heart of Vrnjacka Banja, successfully combining modern technology and comfortable accommodation with spa services and the natural riches of Serbia. Guests can stay in Merkur Novi, Merkur Stari, Sumadija and Sveti Djordje facilities.
