Big international tender for construction of Staro sajmiste Memorial center

Staro sajmiste has never been adequately marked as a place people visit and this project will fix the historical injustice, city manager Goran Vesic said for RTV Pink.

– By May 10, 1942 it used to be a war camp for the Jews and this is where all the Jews who lived in Belgrade before the war were killed. After that, it became a war camp for the Serbs and other antifascists. He was formally located at the territory of the Independent state of Croatia but it was also governed by the Germans and this is where the people from all Serbia were brought to. We think the project is important and that it is our debt towards all the people killed here to mark this area– Vesic said.

According to him, a few months ago, the City Assembly made a decision that May 10 is decalred the Day of memory of holocaust, it is a day when the Nazi authorities in Belgrade published that Belgrade is the city without the Jews, Beoinfo reports.

– It is a big project which will be implemented in a few years. It is important it started, we count on the funds provided through donations since there are foundations in the world for these kind of places. When we find out how the memorial center will look like, we will know how much it will cost. The project implementation will last but it is high time Staro sjamiste was marked in a dignified manner – Vesic said.
