Serbia has a chance to position itself high at the European IT market, but I think we should focus primarily on the entire region. Each of the individual countries is too small a market for any bigger project or company. Together we have a much more interesting story on a global level, Dejan Bosanac, senior software engineer at multinational giant Red Hat says in his interview for eKapija.

Red Hat, headquartered in USA, is a leading open source company in the world and the first one generating profit higher than billion dollars a year.

Dejan Bosanac was also one of the lecturers at recently held Belgrade conference Voxxed Days, which gathered IT community where he spoke on "Messaging for the cloud".

eKapija: What`s the status of messaging in today`software stacks?

- Various messaging technologies has been with us for decades, always providing a layer needed for integration of the distributed systems. Today we live in a world of highly distributed IT systems, ranging from "Internet of Things" to micro services, and that`s why we see a lot of very interesting messaging technologies being developed today. It’s interesting times to work in this area.

eKapija: How significant is open source in IT today?

- Open source is crucial for any serious IT infrastructure today. From the consumer perspective, it`s not just cost benefits any more. It`s absolutely critical to adopt it, if an organization wants to keep up with the highly paced world we live in. On the other hand, it brings individuals and organizations closer and provides a framework for collaboration that makes possible to make great software (and hardware) projects happen completely in the open.

eKapija: What`s the best way for young professionals to enter the world open source software?

- There are lot of benefits for the IT professionals to be involved in open source projects. It`s the best way to learn, network with other people and influence certain technologies. Luckily, it`s very easy to start; just pick up your favorite project and contribute to it. Every little thing counts, from submitting and reviewing bugs, helping users on the forums, doing some documentation, blogging about it, evangelizing it, to actual coding on the project. Don`t be shy, everyone needs help and it`ll be greatly appreciated.

eKapija: What would you recommend to young IT professionals at the beginning of a career when it comes to future most wanted skills?

- For anyone who wants be successful at IT, the first advice is that they must be ready to develop their whole life. This is a field that changes constantly and very quickly, so continuous learning and development is a basic precondition. Technologies will change, but it is always good to have a quality basis on which a person can develop further.

When it comes to current trends in development of distributed software systems, there are many topics that are very popular such as cloud-computing,micro-services, Internet of Things, machine learning, and more. Everyone can choose one of the areas that are close to him or her or applicable to current job and try to keep up with trends.

The good thing today is that everything is available online, documentation, books, lectures, which makes this process easier. In the end, I would encourage young professionals to participate in local technology communities and to strive to communicate more with others. This is the best way to progress personally and to improve local IT community.

eKapija: There is almost no IT event that does not mention that this industry is a chance for Serbia to take a step with significantly developed countries. Does our country really have a chance to position itself high at the European IT market?

- There are chances, of course. The good thing is that it does not require large capital investments. I do not think that this should be done at the planning stage or at the state level. Itis sufficient to spot the problems of people and companies who deal with this business today and facilitate their everyday business. This does not have to be immediately a major strategic change, but there are many tiny details that can greatly increase competitiveness and efficiency of domestic IT companies. The rest is all part of the market and things will come naturally.

On the other hand, competition is great, because everyone wants the same, so you need to learn from someone else`s experiences. For example, from the experiences of countries that have passed a similar path and from which we can find out what was good, what were the mistakes and what is applicable in our particular case.

Also,I think that we need to concentrate on entire region. Each of individual countries is too small a market for any larger project or company. Together, we are much more interested on a global level. Of course, in all this, there are already many successful individual stories, but it would be good to keep them in the future.
