Kragujevac Bioengineering Research and Development Centre is among the three most important in Europe
By developing software and hardware, or more precisely by numerical modelling, the centre has connected its projects directly to medicine and patient aid. Three of its projects are currently being funded by the European Union. A cancer treatment project is being implemented in cooperation with Houston. This treatment is performed by inserting nano-particles into the body of a patient which then release medicine into an affected area and directly destroy cancer cells. The second major project is related to atherosclerosis: by simulating cell growth, a computer analysis can forecast the progression of a disease, enabling an informed decision on when to initiate treatment. Numerical simulations help with solving many health problems. Even the precise location for surgery can be accurately defined with the help of the software.
The third project that is the subject of intensive work in Kragujevac will help persons with hearing impairment, by developing implants that can be embedded in the patient. This opens an entirely new dimension of treatment.
“It is difficult to obtain such funding”, says Nenad Filipović, director of BioIRC, “because the projects are worth around 10 million euros, like for example the Arthritis project. This calls for very big references”.
“The city of Kragujevac has been supporting this centre for five years now by financing the work of the researchers”, said Nebojša Zdravković, Deputy Mayor of Kragujevac who visited BioIRC today.
“Our goal is to keep the best students of Kragujevac in Kragujevac, to create European conditions for them and to ensure they are paid properly, like in Europe. This way, besides exporting goods, Serbia has finally started selling knowledge. This is a unique opportunity for our young experts to stay in their country and do excellent work that is on a par with Europe and the world. There is a great link between the University of Kragujevac and this centre that finances its work exclusively by developing projects, which is highly appreciated by the scientific community. The highest level of knowledge from Kragujevac is being sold to the world”, concluded Zdravković.
