There is no regulated sanitary landfill in the territory of the Raska municipality. Therefore, all waste is instead disposed of at the landfill Razdolje that does not meet hygiene and sanitary requirements. People at this municipality say that was the main reason to take the construction of a recycling yard into serious consideration.

- Practically the only way to manage waste in Serbia is to dispose of it at local landfills, a great majority of which fail to meet even the most basic hygiene and technical-technological requirements. Besides, some of the existing landfills are practically full. The amount of waste disposed of at the Razdolje landfill averages 5,600 tonnes per year – Tijana Pajevic Stefanovic, assistant for local economic development to the mayor of Raska, says to eKapija.

The project and technical documentation is already completed, which proves that the local self-government has seriously approached the solving of this problem. Its preparation was financed by the municipality, the European Union and the Swiss government through the EU Progress Program. About USD 31,000 has been spent on this project so far, whereas its total value is estimated at USD 185,000.

Pajevic Stefanovic says that the recycling yard will serve as a center for the classification and temporary storage of recyclable materials as well as specific waste streams.

When asked if the recycling yard will also be placed at the disposal of some of the neighboring municipalities, eKapija`s interlocutor says that the municipality of Raska has signed an agreement on cooperation with 15 municipalities in the Raska and Moravica regions in the preparation of feasibility study for a regional landfill.

- The plan is to build a regional landfill in Kraljevo as well as 15 transfer stations.

The Recycling Yard project in the Raska municipality is one of the best eight entries in the competition "Public Private Partnership As Development Potential," which is being implemented by the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED) with the support of the USAID Sustainable Local Development Project.
