Oil companies dominate the region - List of top 50 companies in 2011
Oil companies, power companies, telecom firms and foreign affiliates were the most successful in the Adria region last year, an analysis performed by Coface Srbija (www.coface.rs) shows.
This company has published an analysis of the 50 most successful companies (based on business revenues) in the region, which includes Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Macedonia. In addition, there is also a short review of net profit and staff figures pertaining to the top 50 firms.
The top 50 list, which does not include any companies from Montenegro, is led by oil companies. Croatia's INA ranks first by far, with the business revenue amounting to EUR 3.477,774 million and the growth of 15 percent. The second-ranked is Slovenia's Petrol (EUR 2.859,694 million – 15 percent growth), while the third is the Petroleum Industry of Serbia - NIS (EUR 1.760,037 million – 10 percent growth).
Among the top 50 companies in business revenues are 15 firms from Slovenia and 15 from Serbia, 14 from Croatia, 4 from Macedonia and 2 companies from Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Most of the Serbian companies on this list also reported an increase in revenues in 2011. Exceptions are Srbijagas (revenue down 1 percent), Yugorozgas (-8 percent), Delhaize Srbija (-11 percent) and, expectedly, U.S. Steel (-10 percent).
After NIS, the best-ranked Serbian company is the Electric Power Company of Serbia -EPS (8th place with the business revenue of EUR 1.187,3 million). These two are the only companies from Serbia that made it to the top ten, which is dominated by Slovenian companies - Petrol (2nd), Mercator (4th), Slovenske Elektrane holding (7th), Revoz (9th) and Krka (10th).
Companies from Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are not among the 10 most successful firms in 2011, while Croatia has three companies in the top ten – INA (1st), Konzum (5th) and the Croatian electric power company Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (6th).
It is clear that the top 10 list is dominated by oil refining and distribution companies and power production and supply firms.
Telecommunications
Telekom Srbija and telecom firms based in Zagreb and Ljubljana made it to the top of the list - Croatia's Hrvatski Telekom ranks 12th, Serbia's telecom firm is 14th, while Slovenia's Telekom Slovenije ranks 15th. It is, however, obvious that the best results were achieved by the Slovenian telecom company, whose revenues in 2011 were up 66 percent from the year before.
BH Telecom is not among the top 50 companies (60th), and neither are m:tel Banja Luka (71st) and Montenegro's Crnogorski Telekom (78th).
Traders
When it comes to the trade sector, the most successful company on the top 50 list is Mercator, which ranks 4th, followed by Croatia's Konzum. The most popular Slovenian retailer last year reported a 2 percent drop in sales revenue, whereas Konzum's revenue went up 5 percent in 2011.
Delhaize Srbija ranks 24th, but it is noticeable that its sales revenue dropped 11 percent last year.
GDP
According to the preliminary data of the EU statistics institute Eurostat from June this year, Serbia's 2011 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita expressed in Purchasing Power Standards (PPS) equalled 35 percent of the EU average, while Bosnia-Herzegovina's 2011 GDP expressed in PPS amounted to 29 percent of the EU average.
Slovenia's GDP was by far the biggest - 84 percent of the EU average, while Croatia's GDP equalled 31 percent of that average.
