Speaking to representatives of the UN countries, for the first time after being elected to this prestigious function, Jeremic pointed out that this choice was seen as a "giveaway of recognition to the Serbian people", for whom had the honor of serving for more than five years as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

- Keeping in mind our experience, I believe that we can contribute to the implementation of all agreed proposals, especially those related to conflict prevention. In considering this crucial issue in September and later, let us not forget that peace is not merely the absence of war - said Jeremic.
Recalling the "days of suffering" and "glory days" of the Serbian people, the anti-fascist struggle and the establishment of the UN to fratricidal wars of the nineties, Jeremic pointed out that Serbia "has offered a hand of friendship and reconciliation to its neighbours during the past few years, under the courageous leadership of Boris Tadic".
- We have stepped out to all other members of the international community, including those with whom we have had bitter disagreements. One painful era is now finally coming to an end. Our country stands before the world again with his head high, after it was excluded from this family only two decades ago - said Jeremic.
He stressed out Serbia's commitment to the preservation of international peace and security - first declared purpose of the United Nations.

- In our country, government is changed peacefully , in accordance with the rule of law. Serbia is a democratic state, which in addition to efforts to preserve their own sovereignty and territorial integrity and the betterment of its citizens, has no other ambition than to contribute to the general interests of humanity - said Jeremic.
Thanks to everyone who supported his candidacy, Jeremic said that he looks forward to cooperation with all, especially with his competitor, Lithuania's ambassador to the UN Dalijus Cekuolis:
- I would like to thank him for a dignified struggle and express the hope that during my term I will be able to count on his experience and wisdom.
At the end of the speech, Jeremic expressed hope that with joint efforts in the world organization "the day when they will heal all wounds and remove the fears of mankind" was closer - and thus realize the aspirations of the people of the United Nations to save future generations from the scourge of war".
