UniCredit and Triglav as region's largest groups - Results of Deloitte research
The top five banking groups in the region are UniCredit, NLB (assets worth EUR 16.8 billion), Intesa Sanpaolo (EUR 15.8 billion), Hypo (EUR 10.9 billion), and RBA (EUR 10.4 billion). The three largest banking groups (UniCredit, NLB, and Intesa Sanpaolo) together control about 36 percent of the total assets in the region.
- It is interesting to mention that the sum of assets of 15 largest banking groups ranked on Deloitte's list exceeds 80 percent of the total banking assets in all countries of the region - says Aleksandar Knezevic, senior manager at Deloitte.
Despite the negative macroeconomic trends, the financial industry in the region continues to maintain growth of the total assets and, for the most part, its profitability.
The largest banking groups in the Adria region are present in a big number of markets, which enables them to service the needs of their clients with regional activities.
Although Serbia has the largest number of citizens in the region, its banking system ranks third. The amount of assets per capita puts Serbia in the fifth place.
The reasons for that should be sought primarily in a relatively poorer bank penetration. Low bank penetration also suggests a big potential, which still makes the Serbian market one of the most attractive and the most challenging markets in the region. The largest bank in Serbia is Intesa, member of Intesa Sanpaolo group, followed by Komercijalna Banka and Eurobank EFG.
