A product made by Serbian engineers has brought Americans to Belgrade. The owner and representatives of the company Gill’s Onions, the largest onion supplier in the West Coast of the USA, and directors of the company Maxwell Chase Technologies (MCT) have come to Zemun to check the quality of Onion Slicer, the machine that slices a tonne of onion per hour. During the testing, 2 tonnes of onion were sliced. After slicing onions, the machine also placed perfect onion rings into MCT packaging.

The guests from the USA were more than delighted with the product of the team of engineers from the company StanTech, which is specialized for designing and producing packaging lines and systems for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as for the integration of mechanical systems and general automation of production processes.

This machine also did not leave the expert jury for the Aurea award indifferent since it declared Onion Slicer the best investment of the year 2010.

The principle of work of this machine is simplified to the level that only two operators are required to put onion on the conveyor belt, while the machine executes the complete process of slicing and final packaging automatically. The output product is a hermetically sealed plastic packaging filled with two kilograms of freshly sliced onion. This job used to be done by 14 people.

At the Aurea 2011 awards ceremony, Miodrag Djuric, technical director of StanTech, said that StanTech had often been praised by foreign partners and clients but that Aurea was its first award won in Serbia.

- This award is even more significant if we know that eKapija is the most popular business web portal in Serbia and that our project is chosen as the best by eminent experts and prominent businessmen – Mr. Djuric said on that occasion.

The export-oriented company StanTech is not as famous in our country as it is the USA, Japan, and the European Union. The plant in Zemun also delivers tomato slicing machines to the market of the USA, and the tomato slicer with the largest capacity slices 1.5 tonnes of tomato per hour. The company also exports Bag Filler, the system for filling special bags with chopped vegetables, and many other products.

- The automatic onion slicer we have exported to the USA represents a global innovation, while our tomato slicing system has already been patented in that country. If you find yourself at McDonald`s, Burger King, or some other fast food restaurant in the USA, you should know that onion and tomato in your sandwich have been sliced using our machines. Last year we designed and produced two unique machines for the company RICOH Electronic, of which affiliates in Europe and Japan have also expressed interest in these systems. We take pride in a wide range of high-capacity industrial packaging machines - Mr. Djuric said upon receiving the Aurea award.

Mr. Djuric also told eKapija that the company had signed agreements on the export of seven Onion Slicer machines and that it planned to increase its share in Serbia and enter markets in the region.

- We are primarily export-oriented, but two years ago we started offering our products to the domestic market as well, and our aim is to increase the share in the market of Serbia. We also plan to offer our machines to the markets of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Croatia - said Mr. Djuric.

StanTech was formed in 2006 and it was only designing machines for the automation process at the time. At first, these machines were only assembled in the USA for designated customers, while later they also equipped the production plant in Zemun.

- In addition to designing and producing machines, our development team also provides consulting services, that is, it resolves "bottlenecks" and responds to special requests that each plant is faced with. We also hire young engineers who we train. We now work on equipping a complete production hall for a company in Serbia that produces ready-to-eat meals.

The plant in Zemun is an example that high technologies can also be developed in Serbia because, as Mr. Djuric explained, we have a large number of good mechanical engineers and young people hungry for knowledge.
