Induction units have a decades-long history, and thanks to the technological optimization of these units and increased awareness of the need to save energy, investors in the last ten years have increasingly decided to choose this air-water ventilation and air conditioning system. They are most often used in business and administrative buildings, and a large number of installation variants enable the fulfillment of even the strictest architectural requirements. They are also often used as an optimal solution in hotel rooms, as well as in hospitals, where in the latter case it is necessary to take into account the regulations that apply to different classes of hospital rooms.

In rooms with high heat loads, air-water systems represent an energy-efficient alternative to only air systems, i.e. systems in which air is the only working fluid. Bearing in mind that in air-water systems the air in the room is heated or cooled via heat exchangers, the heating and cooling capacities are provided independently of the required amount of fresh air

Fresh air from the air handling unit is introduced into the room through induction units as an addition to cooling or heating, which is provided on the water side. Since the air in this system is introduced only in the amount needed to provide the necessary portions of fresh air per user, the amount of air introduced is significantly reduced compared to only air systems.

Induction units work by inducing the air from the room through the grille on the induction device, passing through the heat exchanger, where it is heated or cooled as needed, and then mixed with the prepared fresh air in the plenum box and then through the slots located on two or on all four sides of the device enters the room.

No additional fans are needed for the distribution of secondary air, which results in lower energy consumption and significantly lower noise compared to air-water systems that basically have a fan coil.

Additional advantages of induction units are:

• long life (up to 30 years), because induction units have no moving parts and no parts that could wear out and require replacement;

• easy maintenance (usual cleaning twice a year is recommended as part of regular maintenance; for cleaning purposes, access is from the bottom, i.e. from the room);

• energy efficient;

• low noise level (it is possible to reach below 25 dB of sound pressure)

• space saving (low constructions; about 2/3 less need for air ducts than with completely air systems);

• optimal thermal comfort of the user.

Another advantage of this ventilation and air conditioning system is the fact that lamps, speakers, smoke detectors and sprinklers can be integrated into induction units for installation in the ceiling, so that architects are free to design a unique and aesthetically pleasing appearance of the ceiling.

In addition to ceiling installation, the German company TROX also produces induction units in variants for parapet installation and floor installation.
