Although the preparatory works on the construction of the memorial center “Staro Sajmiste” started in July this year, after the adopted budget rebalance, it is apparent that the budget of the City of Belgrade for this and next year does not feature a single dinar for equipping this important location, stated the director of the Center for Local Self-Government (CLS), Nikola Jovanovic.

“Staro Sajmiste” needs to be turned into a memorial complex in honor of all the Jews, Serbs and Roma people murdered during WW2 at the concentration camp in this location. The memorial center should also have an educational character, teaching about the scope and the character of the kind of genocide that must never happen again, Jovanovic added, says the announcement made by the CLS.

– On the state level, the law on “Staro Sajmiste” has already been adopted and a part of the funds have been set aside, so it’s truly baffling that the City is not adequately following this important project – says the director of the CLS.
