New Tobacco Product Safety Standards From 2023
In line with the requirements of fire safety which pertain to cigarettes, tobacco products, before being put on the market of the Republic of Serbia, will have to meet the standards SRPS EN ISO 12863:2018 (Standard test method for assessing the ignition propensity of cigarettes) and SRPS EN 16156:2018 (Cigarettes - Assessment of the ignition propensity - Safety requirement).
The producers and importers of tobacco products that said standards pertain to can only put cigarettes with a reduced ignition propensity, that is, cigarettes which go out by themselves if smoke is not actively drawn before they burn out, on the market.
The announcement says that the Rulebook on determining the list of Serbian standards in the field of general product safety was renewed in 2021 and that, for the first time, it encompasses standards which pertain to cigarette paper.
– The change of the requests for producers and importers of tobacco products confirms the implementation of the reference list of harmonized European standards from the field of general product safety contained in this Rulebook, as well as the implementation of the reference list of the relevant harmonized standards of the European Commission published in the Official Journal of the European Union in 2020 – says the announcement.
All the information about the system of quality infrastructure, that is, the technical requirements that the products are supposed to meet when being put on the market of the Republic of Serbia can be found on the portal of the TEHNIS Sector for product quality and safety of the Ministry of Economy at the link https://tehnis.privreda.gov.rs/vesti.html.
