Few people could guess that the construction of the Ruma-Sabac-Loznica highway would lead to the discovery of a new archaeological site in Serbia. Among other things, the explorations have so far shown that beekeeping was developed in the Srem area 8,000 years ago.

On nearly 56,000 km2 of the explored excavations in the Adzine Njive 2 location in the village of Klenak, a significant historical site has been found. This project is one of the biggest excavations in the history of Serbian archaeology. All the cultures that succeeded each other for thousands of years on the fertile Sava terrace have been explored.

Especially interesting and important are the discovered hives which belong to the Starcevo culture, which shows that Srem was one of the cradles of beekeeping 8,000 years ago. Numerous artifacts of the Vinca culture, houses, furnaces and defense trenches around houses, have been discovered. What stands apart are the remains of decapitated human heads from the Copper Age, as well as an economic complex from the Roman period, RTV reports.

This location deserves a high degree of scientific attention. The explorations are continuing, and the archaeological materials discovered so far are a remarkable contribution to the history of science and culture of our people.

All the collected archaeological materials will be put in the Ruma County Museum. The local self-government of Ruma will set aside funds for the accommodation of those materials, said the president of the Municipality of Ruma, Aleksandra Ciric.

In addition to all the benefits that the construction of the highway will bring to the regions of Srem and West Serbia, the Republic of Serbia now has a new archaeological location, which will certainly contribute to the development of tourism, which will attract tourists from the whole world.
