LKW WALTER has been continuously working for years now on process digitization. This is a company which is a European leader in intermodal transport, whether road-rail or combined transport by intercoastal routes.

As Zeljko Piljanovic, Sales Director, says for eKapija, constant improvements are an important component of the offer of services throughout Europe.

Special accent is placed on tracking the vehicles and locating the shipments, but also on environmental protection.

LKW Walter expands the range of its services nearly every six months, and you can read about the details in the interview.

Digitization is an integral part of companies’ business operations. How do you develop and upgrade your solutions? Are new offers being planned?

– LKW WALTER has been continuously leading and inciting digitization and automation in our core activity “FULL TRUCK LOADS” for years now. To us, digital transformation means an increase in efficiency and flexibility, as well as the optimization of business processes, which means a quicker and more efficient communication with the users and shorter communication routes. This opens new possibilities and values for the users. It is important to note that we develop digital solutions independently, in line with the requests of the users of our services. Our internal project team is constantly working to innovate and improve the processes in the field of transport tracking. That means that our users can expect constant optimizations, upgrades and additional functions in the future as well.

Challenges such as the global pandemic have definitely accelerated the digitization process, but also the demands of our users. We believe that constant improvements are an important component of our offer of services throughout Europe, so that we could meet the growing demands of the market with the best technologies.

The possibility of locating the shipment at any moment and tracking the vehicle is a special value. How can the data collected through the GPS signal be used?

– Transport Monitoring on our portal for clients CONNECT has for a while been practically an additional function for our users. The ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) function, which has been getting more important in the past years, enables the users to see the expected time of the arrival of their shipment in a transparent and simple way, with the help of our portal for clients, at any moment. At the beginning of the year, we upgraded out Transport Monitoring with the RTV (Real Time Visibility) function. RTV enables, with the help of monitoring in real time, direct access to the updated position of the shipment, on our portal CONNECT, at any time. This step forward when it comes to receiving information can be immediately used by our clients in order to optimize their processes.

You also offer access to the portal CONNECT to your clients. What are its advantages?

– The portal for clients CONNECT is the company’s online platform, which supports clients in the digital processing and organization of their transport. Access is free and password-protected.

The most important advantages are:

– higher efficiency: quicker and simpler processing in transport planning;
– higher degree of sustainability: fewer empty rides thanks to better planning;
– higher competitive ability: continued development of functions;
– higher transparency: 24/7 transport status view thanks to the RTV function.



What other added value do you offer to your clients?

– Our biggest strength are our employees, the most talented staff from 40 different countries. They take care of our clients independently of their location, personally, on the spot, and/or virtually, and in their language. As experts in their fields, they know the characteristics specific to certain countries and they support them through optimal solutions to the end of creating a long-term partnership.

Are modern, less-polluting, trucks used? What does this mean in practice? What are the characteristics of these trucks?

– We mostly use Euro Class 6 vehicles. LKW WALTER is a European leader in combined rail/road and maritime intercoastal transport. By moving trucks from road traffic to rails and boats, we contribute considerably to reducing the emission of harmful matters, especially CO2, one of the greenhouse gases. Concretely, in 2021, we thereby reduced CO2 emissions by 445,000 tons.

What are the company’s plans for the future?

– With our ecological initiative GREEN TRANSPORT, we are taking important steps toward a gradual improvement of the environmental footprint in the locations of our seats, in carrying out the transport and toward reducing the emissions of harmful matters through ecological measures. By using rails and short-sea shipping throughout Europe, as well as alternative drives, and through the intelligent planning of transport, we are showing that we take seriously our corporate environmental and social responsibility.

LKW WALTER, within its activities in intermodal transport, develops new products almost every six months. On the one hand, it’s new routes, and on the other, it’s additional departures, so that, for example, we would increase the capacities on the existing lines and optimize transit times. Furthermore, until the 100th anniversary of the company in 2024, we are continuing making investments in the combined transport fleet in order to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 600,000 tons a year.
