The director of the PUE Beogradske Elektrane, Rade Basta, estimated that the moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants in Serbia should be revoked and that the possibility of attracting investments for their construction should be considered, given, he says, the great value of such an investment and the transfer of knowledge and technology that Serbia does not have.

– I invite all big American and European energy companies, as well as funds that are prepared to enter, together with Serbia, one such big project in terms of strategy and investment, because I believe that they can recognize their long-term interest and that Serbia can get a reliable partner and further secure the energy stability, which will be the main challenge in the upcoming days – Basta said in a written statement.

He said that Serbia, as one of the countries of southeast Europe, had a good geostrategic position which should be used in the field of energy in order to realize strategic and national goals of development.

On the global level, around 15% of electrical energy is produced at nuclear power plants, and of the 450 nuclear power plants in the world, a third is in Europe.

At the moment, 60 new reactors are being built, and Serbia is surrounded by around ten nuclear reactors at a distance of 400 kilometers.

Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary all have nuclear power plants and they are all either building or preparing to build new blocks. Less than 70 kilometers from the border, Hungary is building a new reactor in Paks, Basta explained.
