World Wind Day was established with the idea of reminding how much energy potential this natural phenomenon carries. Since 2007, this day has been celebrated throughout Europe, and since 2009, the celebration has become a planetary event.

According to the Renewable Energy Sources Association of Serbia (RES), Serbia welcomed the World Wind Day with eight constructed wind farms of 398 MW total capacity, and more than 4GW of developing wind farms.

As for the number of power plants constructed, it has not changed compared to last year.

- The biggest difference compared to the previous year is that we welcome this World Wind Day with the adopted Law on the Use of renewable energy sources and in the process of intensive work on bylaws, which will lead to a larger number of projects in Serbia - the spokespeople from RES Serbia said.

Along with solar energy, wind energy is a renewable source from which the greatest contribution is expected in the fight against the consequences of climate change and the emission of harmful gases.

- The cost of development and equipment used for wind farms is drastically lower than, for example, 10 years ago when the development of wind farms in Serbia began. This global trend will continue, which is good. Low technology prices will bring investors into a favorable situation, so they will need very small incentive measures from the state, i.e. premiums that they will realize at auctions. Of course, for this to happen, complete legal certainty, predictability and bankability of the upcoming regulations are all required - the statement of RES Serbia says.

In terms of global trends, the greatest expectations come from offshore wind farms. The world wind industry is dedicated to extending the life of existing wind farms, and special emphasis is also placed on making wind turbine components fully recyclable, i.e. reusable in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and circular economy.

- As far as Serbia is concerned, a 398MW wind farm contributes to the reduction of 800 thousand tons of CO2 per year. We are investing over EUR 800 million in those projects. Almost 80 percent of the capacities constructed are members of RES Serbia. Very important news is that EPS has started the construction of the WPP Kostolac with a capacity of 66 MW - spokespeople from the Renewable Energy Sources Association of Serbia concluded.

On the today's occasion of the World Wind Day, the Minister of Mining and Energy, Zorana Mihajlovic, stated that the adoption of a special Law on the Use of Renewable Energy Sources laid the foundation for a much better use of the potential that Serbia has.

- With the adoption of the first special Law on the Use of Renewable Energy Sources, we have paved way for much faster utilization of the potentials we have in all types of renewable energy sources. We have created such conditions that all investors can count on fast and efficient procedures, and that the costs for citizens and the economy are sustainable. With the favorable natural conditions we have, I believe we can be one of the leaders in this part of Europe when it comes to green energy - said Zorana Mihajlovic in her statement.
