Karin Komerc and the branch of Russian Railways in Serbia have been selected to be the strategic partners of the Government of Serbia for the reconstruction of the railway from Subotica to the Hungarian border in the direction of Szeged.

These two companies are the only ones to submit a joint bid at the public invitation of the Government of Serbia, worth RSD 12.3 billion.

The deadline for the completion of this job will be fourteen months, and the rebalance of this year’s budget secures RSD 2.4 billion for this job.

The bidder is obliged to use at least a half of domestic materials in the works and to hire local labor force and subcontractors.

What follows are the negotiations of the Government of Serbia and the selected bidder about the signing of the agreement.

The Subotica-Szeged is a one-track, non-electrified, regional railway, which connects towns in the north of Serbia and the south of Hungary. It was built in 1885, as part of then very important main railway on the Baja-Subotica-Szeged route.

The length of the railway in the Serbian territory to Subotica, through Horgos to the Hungarian border, is 26.6 kilometers, whereas the length of this railway in the Hungarian territory is 12.6 kilometers.

– The construction of the Subotica-Horgos-Hungarian border will establish, on a regional level, a new interregional connection of the Southern Transdanubia region and the Southern Great Plain region in Hungary and Vojvodina in Serbia, toward the West Region in Romania. The railway will connect the main logistics units of the region, including the intermodal port of Baja on the Danube, the port of Szeged on the Tisa and the planned logistics centers in Vojvodina. Another advantage will be the improvement of the competitiveness of the ecologically more favorable rail transport compared to road transport – says the announcement of the Serbian Railways Infrastructure, made on the occasion of the opening of this invitation.
