Belgrade entered the competition finals in the category for the best Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, as part of the wider competition during the European Mobility Week 2020, which makes our capital one of the top European cities when it comes to success in the concept of sustainable urban mobility, said Belgrade Mayor Zoran Radojicic.

- The finalists, alongside Belgrade, are the Spanish city of Bilbao and the French city of Grenoble. This French city received the status of "Green Capital of Europe" for 2023. Along with these two cities, Belgrade has offered the best concept of sustainable urban mobility, and I sincerely hope that our city will win in the finals. This proves that we are doing important things in the domains of ecology and environmental protection, and that mosaic is slowly coming together - Mayor Radojicic pointed out.

The mayor added that it is especially significant that Belgrade found itself alongside the Spanish city of Bilbao, since it is a city that, according to Spanish consumers, has the best public transport system in the entire country.

We will find out whether Belgrade will win this competition on April 19.

- The plan of sustainable urban mobility puts pedestrians in the first place, then cyclists, public transport, and private cars in the last place. This concept is important from several aspects: it improves air quality, reduces noise levels and creates conditions for a better quality of life and health of citizens - the mayor emphasized.

He added that in addition to the subway project, the city is also working on expanding pedestrian and bicycle paths and on improving and modernizing public city transport - such as the introduction of river transport in Belgrade.

- At the moment, there are about 100 km of bicycle paths in Belgrade, and according to the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the goal is to build another 400 km of bicycle paths by 2030. A project with the Siemens company is currently being realized in Belgrade - by 2023, smart traffic lights will be installed at 322 intersections in Belgrade - Radojicic reminded.

As he pointed out, the realization of this project will shorten travel time by 15 to 20%, improve traffic safety, reduce exhaust emissions and popularize public city transport.

- Also, we are introducing buttons for pedestrians who have vision problems, so that the traffic in Belgrade becomes inclusive - Radojicic concluded, as Beoinfo reports.
