The architectural studio MITark d.o.o. from Belgrade has won first prize for its preliminary design for the construction and extension of the existing depot of the National Library of Serbia in Belgrade, as announced by the Association of Belgrade Architects.

The authors are engineers of architecture professor Branislav Mitrovic and assistant professor Dr Djordje Alfirevic, and the designers are: Dusan Medjedovic, M.Arch, Uros Majstorovic, M.Arch, Stefan Lakic, M.Arch, Dusan Grujovic, M.Arch. The design was awarded with RSD 500,000.

As the explanation of the work says, the new facility is almost entirely dug in, and the main access to the facility is from Skerliceva Street.

The structure of the expansion of the depot consists of three units:

– a multifunctional exhibition space with the accompanying rooms;
– an office block;
– depot premises.

The facility consists of four underground tiers.

What makes the new depot building functionally specific is the possibility of a horizontal connection between the spaces of the new depot and the existing one. Also important is the connection between the exhibition space with the existing capacities and the library’s official entrance, it is said.

The roof surfaces of the facility are covered in greenery and slightly slanted in the northern part toward the library building, which enables the use of the roof space beneath the library’s floor as an amphitheater with a space for public gatherings.

Second prize, worth RSD 250,000, went to the AKVS Arhitektura studio.
