IBM to Prepare Vaccination E-Passport for German Government – Restaurants, Stores, Fitness Centers and Hotels to Regulate Access through App

The German government has decided to entrust the American concern IBM with the job of preparing an electronic passport indicating vaccination in that country, Business Insider learns.

Citing sources from within the German government, they report that IBM has beaten the German Telekom, which developed the Corona Warn app last year together with SAP.

The Ministry of Health invited bids from several companies, and, according to confidential data, those that have been vaccinated will get a digital passport through centers for vaccination, doctors’ offices, through a vaccination certificate.

The vaccination certificate is first delivered to the vaccinated person in paper form (2D code) or directly through a smartphone app.

Through the app, which is now to be developed by IBM, restaurants, stores, fitness centers, hotels and all other institutions can regulate access by checking whether the person has been vaccinated.

This job is very profitable for IBM, because, as Business Insider writes, according to the ministry’s documentation, they will get 50 eurocents per certificate.

Considering the projected rate of vaccination of 80%, this amounts to around 65 million people a year, that is EUR 32.5 million.

According to the plan, upon the official announcement of the government’s decision, the passport should be prepared within eight weeks, which will enable those vaccinated to start getting this electronic document from June.
