Waste management in Serbia is not just a question of citizens’ responsibility, but also the responsibility of the state, which needs to make big steps in environmental protection. This is confirmed by the data that only 3% of municipal waste is processed here, whereas the process of textile waste recycling is only just being announced.

This is a discouraging piece of information when it comes to textile processing in Serbia. If it’s any consolation, globally, less than 1% of the produced textile is recycled into new textile and nearly 90% of used clothes in Europe end up in landfills or incinerators.

The European Commission has therefore decided to adopt the Strategy for Sustainable Textile this year. In Serbia, a strategy is implemented, more or less, according to which regional centers for waste management collection, separation and recycling should open by 2024.

When it comes to textile waste, the Municipality of Backi Petrovac was chosen, due to the fact that it is the leader in Vojvodina when it comes to primary recycling and the great number of producers that operate in that local self-government.

– We are in the first phase, related to the simplest form of recycling, and that center should be in Backi Petrovac. Agreements with the owner have already been made, the logistics support has been provided by the local self-government, and the government, especially the Ministry of Environmental Protection, will provide support. Parallel with this, a facility in Aleksinac is planned as well – says Arijan Avramov of the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Novi Sad.
