Western Balkans Energy Transition Office Opens – Help in Ending Production of Energy from Dirty Sources
The project should be carried out within the European Green Agenda, with the aim of having Europe stop emitting more gases that cause climate change than it absorbs by 2050, Indikator.ba reports.
As the European Commission explains, the aim is to enable a just transition with European funds, and the model would be based on the experience of the EU from the past few decades in the transition of the countries within the EU toward cleaner energy sources.
It has been explained that the regions in B&H that are covered by this project are the Tuzla Canton and the Central Bosnia Canton, as well as the municipalities of Ugljevik and Gacko. In addition to the Western Balkans, this office will also manage the Ukrainian areas which are dominated by the use of dirty energy sources, such as coal.
The EU says that the coal power plants in the Western Balkans emit as much as 2,000% more sulfur-dioxide and small particles that the EU average, and the 16 thermal power plants in the Western Balkans, with the installed power of 8 GW, emit more pollution than all 250 in the EU.
The Energy Community Secretariat says that the Western Balkans countries, within the Berlin Process at the summit held in Sofia in November 2020, obliged to follow the European plan for decarbonization and achieving particle neutrality by 2050.
– With their signatures, the six countries of the Western Balkans obliged to implement payment for carbon emissions in line with the Emissions Trading System and reduce and then gradually remove coal subsidies – the Secretariat says.
