Construction of 20 to 30 Waste Water Treatment Facilities Throughout Serbia Announced for Next Year
At an online conference on waste water management, Abramovic said that an important step in realizing this job had been made two to three weeks before, when the agreement signed with the Council of Europe Development Bank, which approves the funds for the construction of the facilities, was ratified at the parliament.
According to him, this marks the switch from previous activities, such as making an overview of the condition, the preparation of the legislation, the organization and preparation of the project-technical documentation, to the implementation itself.
He said that, parallel with the construction of the facilities, the professional and the financial support to the local self-government units would continue and there would also be efforts toward the solving of the problem of the management of waste sludge and its purposeful use.
A consultant at the NALED, Natasa Djokic, pointed out that Serbia was not rich with waters, as there are 1,500 cubic meters per capita a year, whereas the optimal self-sufficiency limit is 2,500 cubic meters.
– The situation is not satisfactory when it comes to the coverage of the country with the sewer network, as only 62% of the Serbian populace is covered – she underlined.
A representative of Udruzenje 3E, Srdjan Gajic, cited the information that Serbia needs close to EUR 5 billion for the solving of this problem in the upcoming period, whereby the biggest cost are the facilities for the treatment of waste waters, but also the construction of a sewer network.
The online conference was organized by Udruzenje 3E, the Network of Inspectors of Serbia, in cooperation with the Agency for Environmental Protection and with the support of the USAID.
