New Chairman of IMF Board of Governors Announces Help to the Poor

The priority of Mexican Finance Minister Arturo Herrera, in his capacity as the new chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank will be to help poor countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Finance of Mexico announced.

The World Bank has approved the appointment of Mexican official Herrera, and the IMF should finalize the process by November 4.

Herrera announced that he would press the IMF and the World Bank to double their efforts to help countries with low and medium income so as to help the recovery of the global economy from the consequences of the pandemic, Hina reports.


He will also seek to strengthen the international finance system, the ministry adds in its announcement.

Herrera tweeted that he was “very honored” to be be appointed to his new duty.

The appointment of Herrera marks the second time that a Mexican official is leading the Board, which represents 189 countries.
