Ponikve – Airport or Tourist Complex?
As the director of the Airports of Serbia, Mihajlo Zdravkovic, clarifies for eKapija, the Ponikve Airport complex covers around 560 ha of land, which is four times as much as the airport complex in Nis.
– With that kind of area and its position, the Ponikve Airport is suitable for forming a large tourist complex which, in addition to other features, will also contain a functional airport – Zdravkovic says for eKapija.
He notes that the first step when it comes to Ponikve is to merge the PE Aerodrom Ponikve with Aerodromi Srbije d.o.o. Nis, as the future operator, as this merger is still in progress.
– The plan is to also work on the further demining of the terrain and to complete the reconstruction of the runway of a total length of 3,000 m, in line with the funds available and the transportation needs – he says.
When asked whether the Ponikve Airport could function under the AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) status, which provides pilots with details of other departures, landings and flights in the proximity of the airport, Zdravkovic answers:
– At the moment, the Ponikve Airport is only capable of passenger handling, and then only for small aircraft, of up to 20 seats. In line with the transportation needs of the aviation market of the Zlatibor District and the demands of airline carriers, the airport will also be equipped for the handling of goods.
– The transportation needs are always followed by other services, so it's important for the airport, once it opens for traffic, to be able to safely handle all the types of aircraft it is registered for – he adds.
