The European Investment Bank has published the prior information notice of the public procurement procedure for technical support for the realization of reconstruction and modernization of all railway subsystems of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway. As said, the tendering procedure is expected to open in September 2020, and the planned budget is roughly EUR 4.9 million. More can be found HERE.

Let us remind that, in September 2019, Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic announced that the reconstruction and electrification of the Nis Dimitrovgrad railway would begin by the end of 2019.

However, in early March, it was announced on the ministry's website that the first works, which entail reconstruction with preparation of electrification for the Sicevo-Stanicenje-Dimitrovgrad railway section (80 km), would begin in the third quarter of 2020, whereas the completion of all works was expected in late 2023.

The project is financed from a loan of the EIB of EUR 134 million and grants of EUR 73.04 million acquired through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.

According to the financial agreement, the minimum participation of the Republic of Serbia is 10% of the total value of the project, in line with which there was an application for the collection of additional grants of EUR 34.4 million, to be used for the construction of a bypass railway.

The Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway is the only part of Corridor X that has not yet been electrified. It is a connection of Serbia and Bulgaria through which large amounts of goods are transported from Turkey and the Middle East and a competition to Corridor IV. The project entails the moving of the railway from the center of Nis through the construction of a bypass route.
