At the recently held contest “Architecture and Mega Events – Pandemic and Space”, architect Armin Mesic from Sarajevo, a member of the Fo4a Architecture studio, won with his project tittled “Escape Place – Stay at Home”.

As Mesic explains for eKapija, the “Stay at Home” project is inspired by the situation we all found ourselves in this year and the pandemic which forces one to stay (isolated) in a closed space – by will or force.

– A suitable location for this house is anywhere in the world, and the indoor space area is 92 m2, whereas the balcony space is 36 m2 – Mesic says and adds that the first floor is designed as a concept of open space for a whole-day stay, and everything one needs is within the reach of a hand.

– Four tall compartments, each one oriented to one side of the world, comprise units full of features, with a unique interpretation of space. Along with the reading unit, there's the jogging unit, the sleeping unit or a sleeping room and a sauna.

The second floor features a service room, with external balconies for practicing yoga or watching the stars.

– In terms of structure, the facility is a combination of a steel structure with reinforced concrete elements. The house rests on “V” columns, which provides a sense of security, thanks to its elevation above the ground – Mesic emphasizes.

He adds that an image from the movie The Revenant served as the inspiration for the project, setting the mood and determining the style.

Influence of Pandemic on Future Design

Mesic says that, observing the new rules imposed by the personal distance measure, he believes that there will be a change in the design of business spaces such as collective offices, public buildings etc.

– We will pay more attention and focus on people and their safety, which is a positive aspect of the whole situation. I would say that we will soon start looking more and more for locations outside of urban areas and that collective housing forms will not be as frequent as individual residential facilities, especially outside cities. We are noticing that numerous people are looking to form a self-sustained household, with their own gardens for the cultivation of vegetables, fruit...

Future facilities, he explains, should also be self-sustainable in terms of the ability to provide their own electrical energy, drinking water etc.
