The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, informed the government in Skopje yesterday that he had given an instruction for EUR 4 million from instruments for EU integration to be redirected for the urgent needs of North Macedonia.

The Government of North Macedonia announced that Varhelyi, in his letter to Prime Minister Oliver Spasovski, said that he was considering ways of having the amount of EUR 50 million, initially intended for infrastructure and environment, to be redirected to abating the social and economic consequences of the pandemic.

Varhelyi pointed out that the procedure of allocating EUR 9 million for supporting the liquidity of small and medium companies had been initiated and that there would be three million in budget support to North Macedonia.

In his letter to Spasovski, Varhelyi said that projects for abating the financial problems and managing the crisis in North Macedonia and the region were being developed in cooperation with international financial institutions.

In cooperation with the Regional Cooperation Council, the Secretariat of the CEFTA and the Transport Community, Varhelyi added, ways of securing unobstructed transport of goods in the region and the EU were being prepared.
