A large number of taxi drivers in Serbia have been offered to drive clients through the Uber app, B92.net reports.

Allegedly, a number of taxi drivers have been sent text messages in which representatives of the Birmingham-based company invite them to “connect and earn”. The text contains a British phone number, as well as a link to the Povezi.me website, registered in Montenegro.

– We have learned that Uber has launched an app for drivers and users in Serbia. The professional association of taxi drivers SITAB has asked the Ministry of Transport to organize a meeting of the Work Group. The law is not being enforced by the inspection service and the municipal police toward the persons and business entities that use the Law on Passenger Transport in Road Traffic in the form of an association. These are now companies which organize and carry out taxi services against the Law on Passenger Transport, without meeting the requirements for drivers and legal entities proscribed by law – Vlado Bulatovic, the president of SITAB, told B92.

Bulatovic says that, similar to Uber, the company CarGo already operates in Serbia.
