The agreement on the works on the construction of an annex to the building of the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services (SMATSA) in Belgrade, with a modern Airport Flight Control tower of 75 meters, was signed today in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction of Serbia, Zorana Mihajlovic.

The agreement is worth EUR 17.5 million, and the first works will start right after the holidays, it was said after the agreement was signed at the Government of Serbia.

Mihajlovic pointed out that a new tower, which is certainly needed, considering the development of the Nikola Tesla Airport, had not been built for over 50 years.

– To us, 2019 was a year of infrastructure. We have done a lot in all sectors, but I can say that air transport has been in line with the EU standards since 2014. We have invested a lot in air transport, in the airports in Belgrade, Nis and Kraljevo – Mihajlovic said.

– The state certainly believes that this is an important type of transport in which investments need to be made – Mihajlovic emphasized.

She announced that the construction of the tower at the Nis Airport would also start and added that the airport was important for that part of the country.

Mihajlovic also points out that the construction of a new runway at the airport near Kraljevo would begin in 2020.

The current tower at the Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade was built more than 50 years ago, and the construction of the new one will create the conditions for improved flight control services, which will be accompanied by an increased traffic volume.

The new tower with an annex will be connected with the existing building of the center. The dome of the tower will have 100 m2.

The agreement was signed by the director of SMATSA, Predrag Jovanovic, and the director of Energoprojekt Visokogradnja, Zoran Mihailovic.

The contractor is the consortium consisting of Energoprojekt Visokogradnja, Energoprojekt Oprema and EMPEX. The signed agreement is a part of the SUSAN (SMATSA Upgrade of System for Air Navigation) program.

The SMATSA investment program is worth a total of EUR 126 million and is financed from the funds of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank and the SMATSA.

Let us remind that the beginning of the construction of the tower was previously announced in 2018.
