During the current heating season, the first system of remote heating based on geothermal energy in Serbia was commissioned in Bogatic. With the construction of the heating pipeline six kilometers long, the village in Macva became one of the 250 advanced places in Europe which use thermal springs for heating.

That most coal-powered boilers in Macva will soon be a thing of the past is confirmed by the new substation for remote heating with thermal water at the Mika Mitrovic Elementary School. They says here that they used to buy 150 tons of coal to heat 4,000 m2 of the school. They now only pay a small electricity bill, saving around a million and a half dinars.

RSD 120 million was invested in the construction of the heating pipeline, which connects seven public institutions in Bogatic, from kindergartens and schools to the municipality's building. As much as 75% of the funds came from a loan, and experts estimate that the investment would pay off in six years.

Thanks to the positive experience, people of Macva are planning to realize the second phase of the project as well, namely, heating households with thermal energy, which is why they went on an educational visit to Austria and Germany along with local experts. According to the plan, the household heating pipeline will start at the B-2 borehole, with a capacity of 50 liters of water per second and a temperature of 80 degrees.

Macva has eight geothermal boreholes, whose energy has not been used for four decades.

According to the estimates, the new study and project documentation would be prepared in four years, by which time the funds for the construction of the geothermal heating plant in Bogatic, which will heat the entire village, should be secured.
