When it comes to the preparations for the construction of the Belgrade subway, planning documentation, which covers not only the subway system, but BG voz and tram lines as well, is currently being prepared. Before the construction starts, the waterways and the drainage of rainwater need to be regulated in Makisko Polje.

– A geology study is being prepared. A geodetic survey of both routes has been prepared, we are training the employees for the elements we will need in further development and in designing the subway and later in the construction – explains the director of the PUE Beogradski metro i voz, Stanko Kantar.

Preparation, he says, is two thirds of the job.

– There is a plan for the first ride to take place in 2025 – Kantar pointed out.

The French government has proposed a donation for the financing of the preparation of the feasibility studies and the preliminary design.

– One of the reasons why no funds are planned for the subway within the budget is that there will be a donation worth EUR 9 million – Kantar said.

Challenging terrain

When it comes to the first two lines, the routes, the intersections and the stops are known.

A lot has also been done to examine the terrain, which is challenging in construction terms, because, except for a short overground section through Makisko Polje, tunnel boring machines will have to be used and they will need to pass through terrain varying in structure.

The state is supposed to provide EUR 4.4 billion for the first two lines.

– The first phase of the first line is EUR 1.86 billion, according to the general project. That fits into a certain standard. Depending on the composition of the ground, a kilometer will cost around EUR 100 million – Kantar emphasized.

Agreements on cooperation in building the subway system have been signed and it is likely that the Chinese will carry out the construction, whereas the French will provide the equipment and the trains.

Considering the size of the investment, this should only be taken as a possibility, as the decisions are yet to be made.
