Fifty-six cameras installed along Belgrade-Nis highway, speed control test phase to last three months
He said earlier that cameras would be installed on the section between Belgrade and Mali Pozarevac in the length of 10 kilometers, from Mali Pozarevac to Umcari (7 km), from Umcari to Vodanj (6 km), from Vodanj to Smederevo (12 km), from Smederevo to Velika Plana (30 km) and from Velika Plana to Markovac (12 km).
Cameras will also be installed on the 10-km section between Markovac and Batocina, from Batocina to Jagodina (22 km), from Jagodina to Paracin (24 km), from Paracin to Pojate (12 km), from Pojate to Aleksinacki Rudnik (32 km), from Aleksinacki Rudnik to Aleksinac (6 km) and from Aleksinac to Nis (Trupale) in the length of 20 kilometers.
Four cameras on each of the 14 portals will be active on all six lanes of the highway.
The Traffic Police will test the cameras in the first three months and then decide whether to use them for penalizing drivers for driving over the average speed of 130 km/h.
Average speed is now measured at the entrance and the exit from the highway, which allows drivers to speed and then start driving more slowly at some point in order to bring down the average speed and avoid getting penalized.
Savic told Tanjug that this would no longer be possible with the new arrangement of the cameras.
He says that the sections where cameras are to be installed will be six to 32 kilometers long and that they will be installed on 14 portals in both directions. Savic adds that the testing of the cameras will take two to three months.
According to him, cameras will be able to detect speeds of up to 250 km/h with 100% accuracy.
– At the current traffic frequency, the Belgrade-Nis highway does not allow drivers to go over 250 km/h. Even if someone drives at that speed, they are sure to slow down ahead of a portal – Savic says.
He adds that the cameras can detect the license plate even at speeds exceeding 250 km/h, but not at 100% accuracy, and that it is certain that no one will be able to drive over 250 km/h without being caught on camera.
– The Roads of Serbia advocate the measuring of average speed, as there are so many fatalities on the highway. The aim is to protect participants in the traffic. Serbia has one of the busiest corridors in Europe, as it connects western and eastern Europe. Each year, there's a drastic increase in the number of vehicles – he said.
Savic says that the highways were overcrowded in August 2019.
– We saw that we had portals for the installation of cameras, which usually requires a lot of money. There are portals ahead of each toll booth and those are ideal places to install cameras. This also allows us to see when a vehicle leaves the highway before the exit.
The Roads of Serbia will thereby be able to detect all the vehicles on the highway, as there are cases where drivers remove the fence, exit the highway and avoid paying the toll.
– There are several dozen thousands of such vehicles a year, primarily from towing services. They jeopardize their safety and safety of other drivers. There are cases of people running over dogs or other animals on the highway – Savic emphasized.
