Robot from Serbia to remove plastic from the ocean at Dubai Olympics
The representatives explained on TV N1 what the competition system is and what the tasks at this year's Olympics are. Jelena Tomasevic, Sara Jasovic and Vuk Vujovic point out that they will do everything in their power in order to do as well as possible at the competition.
– This is the third edition of the contest. The concept is that students solve problems that occur in the world. This year's topic is ecology, cleaning oceans. There are two alliances of three teams each and the point is for contestants to work together, because, if they don't, they lose points – Vujovic points out.
Jelena Tomasevic explained how the robot operates.
– It simulates cleaning plastic from the ocean and the robot is designed to handle large balls which simulate large waste. It picks up plastic and takes it away to be recycled – she says.
Sara Jovanovic says that the making of the robot took over a month.
– The robot moves forwards and backwards, left and right and has little hands which it uses to pick up the balls. It also has a catapulting mechanism, which pushes balls to another level and can be raised and lowered. It also has handles which enable it to attach to the upper level and stand in the air – she explains.
The contestants emphasize that they have been given great support from their school friends and that everyone wants them to be successful at the contest.
– The main goal of the project is to increase awareness of the importance of STEM careers as a perspective for the development of young people and provide support to intercultural cooperation and exchange. Each year, there are 160 to 180 countries taking part in these Olympics – Vujovic says.
