Belgrade, Military underground facility (150 m below the surface) in Topčider opened for public
According to the decision of Supreme Council of Defense, underground military facility of special purpose in Topčider, “Karaš”, is no more secret of the State. That facility can survive nuclear atack and journalists were “allowed to enter every part of that facility”, of which construction was completed in 1971.
“Karaš” is entered through 3 wooden doors, behind which is a labyrinth of corridors nearly 1 km long, which slowly goes down further below the surface. There are working and residential premises for the representatives of the highest State and military agencies, clinics, kitchens, toilets and bathrooms placed on three levels. Inside the facility, which is located 150 meters below the surface, are premises for the highest officials, their collaborators and members of Army. About 70 people could live in “Karaš” on longer period.
That facility was used only once, during the NATO bombing in 1999. On that occassion, this facility was used by former president of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milošević.
