On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Italian diplomatic-consular network is organizing over 150 initiatives worldwide this year in remembrance of the renaissance genius who left behind a seemingly limitless body of work to study, admire and think about.

On this occasion, the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, in cooperation with the association of Ponte tra Culture and Bitef Theater Belgrade, is presenting the play “Leonardo da Vinci. The Hidden Work” by Michele Santeramo, directed by Gianluca Barbadori, to be performed this Saturday, October 5, at 8 am, at Bitef Theater.

The original Italian play takes the form of a monologue, but can be adapted for several actors. The version to be performed in Serbia will be performed by two actors, Maja Susa and Zoltan Molnar, it is announced on the website of the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade.

Santeramo takes us on a journey through an imaginary dimension which is at the same time firmly tied to Leonardo da Vinci’s biography. This humorous, ironic play is inspired by Da Vinci’s designs of war devices and arms and invites us to think about war, the meaning of life, the desire to be immortal, death and art through a range of events inspired by the artist’s works and explorations in various fields.

The performance in Serbia has been enabled thanks to the Tuscany Theater Foundation’s licensing foreign performances of the play in other languages.

Gianluca Barbadori is a professional actor and director with a substantial international experience. As a director, since 1994, Barbadori has directed over 100 plays with professional actors, young actors, student actors, young people and adolescents, even in difficult situations, in numerous countries. As a lecturer, he became active in the fields of research and education in the 1990s, through the realization of bilingual theater workshops, internships and intensive theater courses in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and English in various cities and festivals.

The play is organized as part of the celebration of 140 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and Serbia and is a part of the program of selected events of the National Committee for Marking 500 Years from the Death of Leonardo da Vinci.
