European Investment Bank to support environmental protection projects – EUR 5 billion needs to be invested in waste waters sector
They talked about the possibility of future cooperation with the EIB on new projects and models of support by the EIB, the press release says.
Minister Trivan thanked them for their good partnership cooperation on important infrastructural projects realized by Serbia with the support of the EIB, especially in the waste waters and waste sector, which is of primary importance when it comes to reaching the European environmental protection standards, it is said on the Government's website.
Trivan said that EUR 5 billion needed to be invested in the waste waters sector, as well as another 1.5 to 2 billion euros for solving the problem of waste, and that quality projects were needed for it.
According to him, these are enormous investments, which require careful planning and local organizing.
– The competent ministry, seeing the lack of professional and financial capacities of municipalities, therefore helped prepare the project-technical documentation. At the moment, there are 13 projects which are fully ready and another 33 which are in the final stages of preparation – the minister said.
Trivan underlined that well prepared and sustainable environmental development projects were important at the moment when Serbia is initiating its new investment cycle thanks to the strong economy and the growth of the GDP.
– Investing in the environment is not an expense, but a benefit to the citizens and the economy – the minister said.
The representatives of the EIB expressed their readiness to provide expert technical help and financial aid in securing new grants and credits for the realization and expansion of environmental project, a field which is one of the main priorities in Serbia and the region for the EIB.
