Construction of mechanical - biological waste treatment facility in Kragujevac to start soon
The construction of municipal and industrial waste processing complex will be carried out with the support of the Republic of Serbia, the European Union and the users of the facility. The investment would be worth around EUR 40 million.
– Jovanovac landfill was opened over 60 years ago and we were ready to shut it down for two decades already, said Vladimir Maksimovic, Member of the City Council in charge of Public Utility Services.
– The waste storage permit will officially expire in two years so we will have to carry out the works in several stages. That is the only solution because over 200t of waste gets deployed in this landfill every day. Kragujevac will, in all probability, solve this huge ecological issue on the very edge of the city soon.
Over the course of 60 years, almost three million cubic meters of municipal and industrial waste was stored in Jovanovac landfill. Consequently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced three months ago that the Kragujevac landfill met all the criteria for the design of sanitation and remediation project.
The officials stated that aside from Kragujevac , municipalities of Arandjelovac, Topola, Batocina, Lapovo, Raca, Knic and Rekovac will also be able to use the landfill.
Let us remind that the new Waste Management Strategy for 2019-2024 is expected to be adopted at the end 2019, or at the beginning of 2019 at the latest. You can read more about what the new Strategy predicts in a separate article.
