The Department of Urban Planning and Construction of the City of Novi Sad has published the draft plan for the development of the local airport Cenej, to be used for commercial purposes.

The plan envisages the construction of an asphalt runway and a terminal building, and the value of the project is estimated at EUR 20 million, Blic reports from two sources.

– The Cenej airport should be used for commercial flights, charter-flights, the transport of workers and air taxi services. Furthermore, it will still be used for agricultural and sports purposes. Regional operations entail the connecting of northern Serbia with business centers in former Yugoslav states and other neighboring states – the department says.

They add that the length of the runway during the first phase of the development of the Cenej airport should be at least 1,500 meters, whereas the width should be 30 meters. In the second phase, it will be extended to 2,500 meters and widened to 45 meters.

The runway will stretch in the northwest-southeast direction, avoiding the residential parts of the city.

Novi Sad hopes to develop this airport by 2021, when the city is to become a European cultural capital.
