Revival of ports in Serbia – Reloading of over 13 million tons of cargo and docking of 1,300 cruise ships expected by the end of 2019

A total of 6.28 million tons of cargo was reloaded in the first half of this year in ports in Serbia, a growth of 14% compared to the first half of 2018, the Port Governance Agency announced.

In addition to increased economic activity, the growth of the volume of reloaded cargo is also down to the strategic orientation of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure toward upgrading water transport and including it in the new investment cycle, the press release says.

The most frequently reloaded types of goods are still gravel, sand and stone aggregates, making up a total of 21%, whereas ores are second with a share of 20%. The third place belongs to grains with 18%, whereas the fourth one features oil and oil products with 12%.

According to the Agency's data, the beginning of this year's nautical season was marked by an increase in the number of cruise ships docking and coast crossings. By July 1, 601 cruise ships docked at the international passenger terminals in Serbia, 16% more than in the same period last year, and there were 81,127 coast crossings, an increase of 15.7%.

The largest number of dockings took place at the Belgrade port (297), followed by Novi Sad (170), Donji Milanovac (91) and Golubac (34).

Since the beginning of the year, the Government of Serbia declared two new international passenger terminals at the proposition of the Port Governance Agency – in Veliko Gradiste (Ram) and Kanjiza, which is the first terminal on the Tisa in Serbia.

The Agency estimates that over 13 million tons of cargo will be reloaded in ports in Serbia by the end of the year and that around 1,300 cruise ships will dock, the number previously expected for the period until 2025.
