Twitter to name representative for Serbia in line with new Law on Personal Data Protection
In a response to the letter sent by the SHARE Foundation to Twitter and other companies, such as Google and Facebook, it is said that Twitter has started the process of appointing a representative for Serbia and that more details can be expected in the near future.
Bojan Perkov of the SHARE Foundation explains:
– It is not yet clearly defined what the relation between the representatives of the companies and the officer for personal data protection will be like and I do believe that we should see how this works in practice before giving a detailed answer to this question. At the moment, we can say that, by accepting the authority of the personal data protection officer, foreign IT companies, such as Twitter, also accept the responsibility for the enforcement of the Law on Personal Data Protection in practice. In other words, they accept that the officer can carry out full supervision of compliance with the law through the representatives in Serbia. This is especially important from the aspect of citizens exercising their rights regarding personal data protection, with the assumption that the protection mechanisms will be more efficient – Perkov said.
