The final route of the first two subway lines has been determined, whereas the works are to begin in late 2020, which eKapija has already written about. Also, a third line is planned in the future, which should connect Vozdovac, the new bus station in Block 42 and the railway station New Belgrade through Prokop, Slavija and the Republic Square, announced Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic.

He pointed out that local architects will get an opportunity to design all the stops, modeled after the subway systems of European capitals.

The first line will be entirely underground, except for a section in Makisko Polje, where the depot will be located as well. The second line will be partially on a viaduct, in New Belgrade and Zemun. The first two lines are to cross at the Sava Square, that is, in the location of the former main railway station. In this phase, the subway system will not cover Prokop, but passengers will be able to use BG Voz and catch the subway one stop away, in Mostarska Petlja.

– Passengers from the new bus station in Block 42 will also be able to reach the subway through BG Voz, but only until the third line is built – Vesic told Vecernje Novosti, as reported by Beoinfo.

He added that the designing of the third line will begin at the same time as the construction of the first two.

According to him, the Chinese partners will be in charge of building all the stops, whereas their development will be subject to a special contest.

– We thereby want to provide local architects with an opportunity to leave a permanent mark in developing the city and to develop the stops so that each one represents a part of the history of Serbia and Belgrade – Vesic added.

The subway system will be fully integrated with other forms of urban, suburban and intercity transport, as well as BG Voz.

– Parallel with the subway system, we will be developing the BG Voz system, which requires around EUR 500 million. We are discussing this with Japanese companies which are supported by their government. This year, BG Voz will be extended to Mladenovac, through the Djurdjinci settlement near Sopot. From December 8, BG Voz will “cover” Barajevo and Lazarevac, whereas, during the autumn, it will reach Pancevo. The building of a new line which would cover Surcin, the future national stadium and the airport, as well as the line to Karaburma, is planned as well – Vesic said.

Vesic emphasized that France was a very important partner for Serbia, especially companies Egis and Alstom, which, as he said, helped to bring the city to the point where the construction can start.

– Within the arrangement with the Chinese side, we expect for there to be room for the French companies as well. Still it's a matter of agreement between private partners, which we have no say in. We encourage them to keep negotiating in that direction, and Finance Minister Sinisa Mali and I are at their disposal in order to provide a framework within which they can reach an agreement – Vesic said.
