A draft feasibility study for the project of waste water treatment in the city, being realized within the Program of Support to Environmental Infrastructure Projects – Phase 2, has been presented in Kragujevac. The preparation was financed by the Government of Sweden, and the job of preparing the study was put in charge of the consortium of consultants BH, IAC, AHANTE and SENIOR.

– Through the cooperation of the city of Kragujevac and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Serbia, and with the support of the Government of Sweden, we will realize a large infrastructure project, which will secure clean rivers, a healthy environment and good health for the citizens. The waste water treatment system in Cvetojevac was put into operation nearly three decades ago and there have not been any considerable investments in revitalization or modernization since then. The study will enable Kragujevac to secure grants for the realization of this large project through the IPA program – said Minja Obradovic, the member of the City Council in charge of investments and project management, Infokg portal reports.

The study entails a preliminary design and an analysis of the options for the central waste water treatment facility, the solving of the problem of the presence of sludge in the system, a hydraulic analysis of the waste water collection system, the preparation of the priority investment projects (and the long-term investment project) for the waste water collection system, and an analysis of costs and benefits.

Two options for the waste water treatment system have been analyzed: the reconstruction and the construction of a new system. Experts have recommended the construction of a new facility as the overall more favorable option, both in terms of the design and the costs.

The average age of the sewer system in Kragujevac is around 32 year. Relative to the number of users, the average diameter is small and the system operates at an acceptable level in dry weather. That is why the priority measures pertain to the reconstruction and replacement of the main collectors in the length of close to 40 kilometers, the extension of the system by 25 kilometers and the implementation of two spillways, at the Monument to Jovan Ristic and Kosovska Street. The measurements have shown that the current system cannot handle 60 minutes of uninterrupted precipitation and precipitation at the intensity of 21 millimeters.

The project of waste water treatment is carried out at a state level and is part of the activities within meeting the requirement of Chapter 27 in the process of accession to the European Union.
