There is no reason for Serbia to terminate its cooperation with Huawei, Telecommunications Minister Rasim Ljajic commented regarding the restrictions implemented by Google when it comes the Chinese company.

– We do not want to be the collateral damage of the clash between large TC companies – Ljajic told Radio Slobodna Evropa and noted that several agreements signed between Serbia and Huawei were being realized.

– By the end of the next year, 750,000 households will be connected to the optical network as a result of a EUR 150 million agreement with the Chinese company.

Regarding the alleged surveillance related to Huawei and the alleged forwarding of sensitive information to Chinese authorities, Ljajic says that there have been no such threats to security in Serbia.

Huawei and Google make statements

Huawei said in its press release that update services would remain available to smartphone and tablet users:

– Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefited both users and the industry. We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.

On this occasion, Google said that they were complying with the order and reviewing the implications.

– For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.

Android has made a statement to the same effect.
