Removal of Old Sava Bridge and construction of new one postponed for 2020
– The river is still being searched for potential unexploded bombs from the past wars, and the necessary documentation has not yet been prepared – says Marko Stojcic, Belgrade City Architect.
The initial plan was for the removal of the Old Sava Bridge to begin once the laying of tram tracks on the Ada Bridge is completed, so that the link between the old and the new parts of the city would be operational. According to Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic, tram traffic on the Ada Bridge should start in the first half of June, but the works in proximity to the Sava Square will not begin at the same time.
The construction of the new bridge will begin only once the optimal conditions are met, which is not realistic to expect before early 2020, as the bridge project is still being prepared.
– To us it is very important for citizens to be provided with a connection between the old and the new parts of the city, so we won't remove the old bridge before we secure a way for the traffic in this part of the city to be carried out regularly – Stojcic explains.
When revealing the exact location where the Old Sava Bridge would be moved in March 2019, city officials announced that the new bridge, which would be open only for pedestrians and cyclists, should be completed in 2021. Considering the delay, it's clear that this deadline will be extended.
We remind that the initial plan was for the moving of the Old Sava Bridge to begin this summer and that it was supposed to be placed between Block 70a and Ada Ciganlija after a renovation in 2021.
