Representatives of over 1,500 health institutions – pharmacies in private and public ownership gathered within several associations, with the support of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Pharmaceutical Association of Serbia have appealed to the Government and the National Assembly of Serbia to include the stipulation concerning the demographic-geographic criteria for the opening of pharmacies in adopting the Law on Pharmacies, as their survival and the quality of healthcare are otherwise jeopardized.

A stipulation narrowing the criteria for the opening of pharmacies was included in the draft law that went through a public discussion process over two years ago. It proscribed a minimal distance of 300 meters and the ratio of one pharmacy to 4,000 citizens.

However, once the draft law entered the parliamentary procedure, the said item “disappeared” and was replaced with the one pertaining to state-owned pharmacies only.
