EBRD First Vice President Jurgen Rigterink will visit Montenegro on 18 and 19 February for meetings with senior government officials and business representatives.

During his visit, Rigterink will, among others, meet Milo Djukanovic, President of Montenegro, Dusko Markovic, Prime Minister, Darko Radunovic, Minister of Finance, and Osman Nurkovic, Minister of Transport, the EBRD announced.

During his stay, Rigterink will explore how the EBRD can further deepen its impact in Montenegro through investments and policy engagement. He will also emphasize the Bank’s support for the country’s aspiration to become a member of the European Union. The accession negotiations started in 2012 and to date 32 out of 33 chapters have been opened.

According to the latest country strategy, the EBRD has three main strategic priorities for Montenegro.

First, to enhance the competitiveness of the private sector by investing in selected companies with excellent growth potential, especially in the tourism, trade and agribusiness sectors.

Second, to emphasize the importance of green growth through projects focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency & security, in line with the Bank’s Green Economy Transition (GET) approach.

Third, to further integrate Montenegro into the regional and European economies by improving connectivity and expanding cross-border transport and energy links.

This will require the country to invest heavily in infrastructure, which includes not only roads, airports and railways but also municipal infrastructure such as waste management, water supply and treatment and health and education.

The EBRD is keen to support these investments in cooperation with the EU and the Western Balkans Investment Framework, the press release says.

To date, the EBRD has supported 58 projects in Montenegro with a cumulative business volume of EUR 567 million.
