European Parliament supports medicinal use of cannabis
Members of the European parliament call for the European Commission and the authorities in EU member states to define medical cannabis, prevent abuse and secure funds within the new program of the therapy effects of cannabis.
States in which the medical use of cannabis is legal often experience problems with terms of access, prescription and purchase of the product.
Some members of the European Parliament believe that an all-encompassing regulation of cannabis-based medical products would limit the black market and help guarantee product quality.
Also, this would limit the access of underage persons to cannabis and provide patients with legal security and access, with special precautionary measures for younger people and pregnant women, the text of the resolution reads.
Members of the parliament believe that there is convincing evidence of cannabis' therapeutic effects in treating chronic pain in adults, chemo-therapy-induced nausea and vomiting and spasmodic symptoms in MS patients.
Some members of the parliament who are medical doctors warn that the stereotype of cannabis as something extremely dangerous should be fought, but that, on the other hand, patients should be discouraged from using it indiscriminately.
European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova has announced further research on the therapeutic effects of cannabis.
When it comes to the use of cannabis, the most liberal EU states are the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Czech Republic, as noted on political analysis portals.
